Calla Haynes-Interview 2« It’s really hard to pick one memory… Being able to travel around the world to present my work his been amazing. We have had shown the collection in Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Toronto and Hong Kong! »

Calla Haynes-Interview 3« I would say that it’s really competitive and you have to be very multi-facted. It’s important to have a unique, distinct voice and to be able communicate your ideas well. This means a very strong knowledge in fashion history and the arts in general, strong drawing skills, and then I would say a particular skill on top of that – for me that was graphic design / print design – but it could be draping, knitwear, embroidery, …

The cursus in Parsons is very well rounded involving sewing, pattern drafting, draping, fashion illustration, fashion history, but especially focused on Concept Development. The most class time and homework was spent developing collections – themes, sketches, colours, moodboards and how to communicate those ideas in the clearest way. »

Calla Haynes-Interview 4« I had the honour of being invited by Made Fashion Week that host young designers at Milk Studios in NY during NY Fashion Week. They are able to sponsor designers which greatly reduces the cost of show for me.

I also felt that New York Fashion Week in general is more open and receptive to seeing emerging designers, and that I would benefit from the added exposure. »

Calla Haynes-Interview 5« The Marais really is my tiny village. I live and work here. I love the Marché des Enfants Rouge – an open market with different food stands as Japanese, Lebanese, Moroccan, Hamburgers, … – it’s great for lunch. I like the Mary Celeste for cocktails but it’s always so packed!

I love the Palais-Royal. It’s a great place to hang out with my dog Lilybear. Kunitoraya 2 is an amazing Japanese restuarant! »

Calla Haynes-Interview 6Highwaisted skinny jeans (usually printed), and a big easy sweater or sweatshirt. I like the cut of the boyfriend jacket from my collection which we do every season in different fabrics – usually tweeds or jacquards. Most days I wear moccasins – they’re so comfortable.

Calla Haynes-Interview 8Every summer I go home to Canada to see my family. We have a lake house in Ontario that’s very peaceful, a great place to relax and recharge.
